DEFINITIONS OF THE FORMAL ELEMENTS: Colour is: When light is reflected off an object, colour is what the eye sees. Line is: The identifiable path of a point moving in space. It can vary in width, direction and length. Shape is: Something distinguished from its surroundings by its outline. Texture is:  the creation of the feeling in a piece or an object. Pattern is: The repetition of anything; shapes, lines, or colours. However it doesn’t always have to be repeated. Tone is: The degree of lightness or darkness in an area, it is used in art to identify where these light and dark areas are. ARTIST'S PIECES LINKED TO FORMAL ELEMENTS: Piet Mondrian Composition A: Composition with Black, Red, Gray, Yellow, and Blue 1920 Oil on canvas Colour, Pattern, Line and Shape This piece of art relates to pattern because of the use of rectangles and squares repeated with different colours and sizes to give different views. It also relates to colour, line and shape. The colour is used to fill the shapes in the pattern; the line is used to create/separate the shapes. Francis Bacon Man with Dog Tone This piece of art relates to tone, because the artist has used tone to create the effect of the dog looking 3-dimensional. Also, the tone in the piece shows where the light is coming from and which side of the dog is in the dark and which side of the dog is in the light. Maurits Cornelis Escher Sun and Moon 1948 Woodcut printed from four blocks Pattern This piece of art relates to pattern, because patterns are often one, two or more images repeated and this is what the artists have done to create this piece. The piece shows images of birds, (some the same, some not) repeated indifferent angles to make them all fit together, which creates pattern. Jackson Pollock The Key 1946 Oil on canvas Colour This piece of art, relates to colour because the artists has used colour to shade in objects and the background. The piece seems to be coloured in roughly which could almost create a texture. Georges Braque Fruit Dish 1908-09 Oil on canvas Shape This piece of art, relates to shape because there are lots of different types of shape in it and there are different viewpoints of the objects, which shows different shapes. Robert Delaunay Homage to Bleriot 1914 Oil on Canvas Colour This piece of art relates to colour, because its bright and bold, there are many different shades of colour in it: light and dark. The variety of colours creates an exiting and vibrant feel to the piece. David Hockney A Bigger Splash 1967 Acrylic on canvas Line and Colour This piece of art relates to line, because of the straight lines used to create the house, pool, palm trees and diving board. These straight lines make the painting look very bold and have clear outlines. This piece also relates to colour, the way the artist has used blocks of colour to fill in objects also makes the painting look very bold. David Hockney Two Deckchairs, Calvi 1972 Acrylic on canvas Line This piece of art relates to line, because of the straight lines used in the entire picture to create the deck chairs, windows and pavement.
